Hello again! It is Lisa Ann. ( I know...You are sick of me already.) However...sit down and shut up. We are going to talk about CAPERS again. This time Capers With WORDS.
Look to your left. (Your other left, silly.) This is called "CAPERS WITH WORDS"...no wait...it is called "onomatopoeia" . It is a Greek word for making sounds to identify things. Most of us, (unless we are really angry and horrible people, find this amusing). Take for instance, the funny sound that you make when your teacher asks you what the COW says? What do you say? 'MOOO!' The same is true with a human's imitation of a sheep....except it sounds like 'BAAAH'. Monkeys go 'OOO OOO' ( I forget the rest of what they say.)
When you go into the auto-guy's shop you rarely know WHAT is wrong with your car. So you say: "My car is making a funny noise." He looks at you, with amusement and asks you what TYPE of noise? And you say. "well. it sounds like BRRRR......inkkkk....ugggghhhh..bleh" And the unshaven guy behind the counter tells you that you need a brand new manual transmission, even though you are pretty sure you brought in an automatic.
Anyway...if you're still paying attention, we are talking about people making sounds with their mouths to communicate. (For some that simply means talking endlessly.) I am certain, however, that anyone reading this knows how to make a "flatulence" sound without actually passing wind. It's funny! Plus it makes things interesting and often clarifies points. I mean, seriously, if you're reading this and thinking it's bunk...you cannot help but make that "raspberry" sound even if it gets slobber on your computer screen.
The point is that today's "caper" is not about the pretty fruit I described yesterday, but that there is an even cooler Mediterranean word called onomatopoeia.
Use it wisely, and often. PFFFHTTTT!
Love, Lisa Ann
